We just had our sales conference today and this cover got the nod from a few reps. I was pleasantly surprised since, 1) it's a reprint of older stories and this particular meeting tends to focus on front list books, and 2) because it's a bit enigmatic and not everyone appreciates that. The artwork is by the legendary Brad Holland -- who also did one of my all time favorite Tor cover paintings, Jonathan Carroll's Outside the Dog Museum.

yeap. you can always spot a Holland! i get stopped by his magazine interiors all the time. :) Really amazing work~
I loved his work for OtDM, and this cover is just as gorgeously intriguing. The artwork and design are exactly what would make me lift this off the bookshelf to investigate further.
I was wondering why Richard Matheson sounded familiar. Then I realized he wrote Bid Time Return, which I read (and loved!) years ago. It was eventually made into a movie: Somewhere in Time. Hmm, somehow, I could see Holland doing illustrations for that book as well, though the movie had more of a Bernie Fuchs kind of sensibility. Either way, I'm excited to pick up this volume when it's out!
That is a fantastic cover...a bit old school. And it is a Matheson book, even better!
I recall that Carroll cover and it is indeed great.
I imagine both paintings look amazing in person.
Carl – Sadly, Brad tend to send a chrome and not the painting. Luckily Dog Museum won a Spectrum and Society of Illustrators award so I was able to see that original.
One of the interesting things about working with Brad is, right from the first phone call he already knows more about the project than I do. One of the few truly brilliant people I’ve met.
Mike - Comparing Somewhere in Time to Fuchs is fantastic! It's been a 100 years since I've seen that movie, but it sounds just right.
Button, Button is being filmed right now. Odd, since the story is just three pages long. Well see. I'm just hoping we get this edition out before we have to muck it up with movie info.
I also loved a comment of Brad about you and the 'OtDM' book in the Society of Illustrators #47 anual:
'It's a well-known fact that if you give a client five sketches, he'll pick the worst one. Irene Gallo must not known this policy because I always send her a bunch of sketches and she always picks the one I'd most like to do.'
When an illustrator and an AD 'click' you'll get amazing work.
Thanks for the nod, Bjorn. I was very gratified when I first saw that.
