We recently published Elizabeth Bear’s The Horrid Glory of Its Wings on Tor.com. It’s a lonely and moving story. John Jude Palencar was an easy choice for it -- it needed something quiet and soulful, and a little sad but still strong.
Sketches below. The first was the clear choice...but the second one makes me want to see what John could do with a dark superhero project.

Wow, incredible! I love both of the sketches for different reasons. I can totally see that 2nd one being fleshed out, would be a trip to see him do a super hero piece ;)

But...
I am in love with this. The most beautiful and inspiring piece of art I've seen in a long while. Thank you for sharing.
Well that's cool. I had to stop at look at it twice.
But after seeing the sketch, I wish he would have kept the girl's head larger, and some of the roughness of it. The sketch has a bit more life to it. But I know how difficult it is to work to a finish and keep that first blush of inspiration.
I really like the peice as a whole, I like most of mr. Palencar's work (also- coolest last name ever?) and his style is just so definitive.
But.
I don't feel the character represented there is the character I read about. She looks young and strong and hopeful and beautiful, like a daughter of a swordsman in a ethnic high fantasy setting, and not like a buffalo-backed thick rimmed glasses wearing dentist-seeking inner city welfare/foster kid. Great piece to look at, but not how I imagined her.
...though, I'm curious if that matters to others.
