Charles Addams

Society’s latest acquisition – Charles Addams.

We didn’t have an Addams in the collection before so I am rather excited about this addition.

I have a poignant story about an Addams work. My parents knew a rather well off couple who, collected all sorts of things. Later, in the 1980's and 90's they got into some bad real estate deals and lost alot of money. The husband of this couple, fearing that his wife and he would have nothing to live on committed suicide. When the wife was cleaning out alot of "attic" items, she came across two signed limited prints and,a small original by...Charles Addams. She called me(this was in the early 90's) and asked "if these were worth anything" as she almost gave them away. I did some phone calls(in the days before email) to Richard Kelly who got some people in touch with her. The upshot was that she sold the Addams' works and made something like $10,000(at the time, I am sure it would be more now) which really aided in bailing her out of financial problems. I believe, but am unsure, that the NY Public Library got them. The irony was that her husband need not have killed himself. Art is something that always works it's magic in the universe.

That’s a crazy story, Bob. I hope they did go to the Library - the more work that is publicly accessible the better.

Unfortunately no one will ever find artwork in my family's basements and attics. (At least not until I’m gone!)

I was at a framer recently and he told me that someone came in with a “postcard” with scribble pencil on it. The guy wanted the framer to clean it off and frame it for his kid’s bedroom. The framer recognized it as an original Edward Gorey drawing and refused to erase the underdrawing. Hopefully the guy got it appraised and is either taking care of it or has sold it to someone who will.

Both of those stories are fantastic...why, oh why didn't they happen to me? Minus the whole suicide angle, of course.
