Very sad news...Stanley Meltzoff passed away yesterday morning. We have lost a truly great artist. He made an indelible mark on the fields of science fiction publishing, mainstream illustration, and wildlife painting. Treat yourself by visiting his website here.
"Stanley Meltzoff effectively introduced me to a level of artistic sophistication that was both startling and revelatory and which has remained with me in all the decades since... "Genius" is a term that is perhaps too casually applied these days, but that's precisely what is on vivid display when standing in front of one of Stanley's oils." Arnie Fenner, in upcoming Locus obituary
"I would have to claim [Meltzoff's] work as a major inspiration to me and a good part of the reason why I've spent the last three decades of my life as an SF artist." Vincent Di Fate in Infinte Wolrds
"One only has to look at his art to know that his life was rich with poetry." David Apatoff on Illustration Art.

Thanks for alerting us to this, Irene. There were other illustrators who were more famous or who struck more of a chord with the general public, but Meltzoff was really a lion of a human being; you can tell from his ferocious intellect and his great curiosity and energy for the things he touched. His passing should not go unnoticed. There are damn few like him.
wow his stuff is great! i'm ashamed to say i had not heard of him before this.
