Eric Fortune's Red Magician

Many people seem (justifiably) enamored with Eric Fortune's The Red Magician. Here is a progression from sketch to finish. In art school they tell you that a painting should slowly evolved from the ground up. Of all the illustrators I know, only Eric and David Bowers actually to paint like that. Eric's patience pays off -- all that layering creates a glow and a subtlety to the surface that is just remarkable.

Wonderful! Thanks for posting -- always appreciate seeing artist's progress shots and getting even just a bit of an idea of what he/she is doing to make a great illustration.

Fantastic! Thank you for posting this and thank you to Eric as well. There is such a wonderful blend of realism and stylization in this piece. I love the fabric and the composition and concept are just outstanding. Thanks again.

Thanks so much for posting this. And please tell Mr. Fortune that if he ever gets the urge to release this art as some kind of limited-edition poster, I'll be first in line to buy it. Because it is made of Magnitogorsk-y smokestack AWESOME. :D
