A Sad Farewell to Edd Cartier

Edd Cartier passed away on Christmas day. He was a highly regarded and influential artist from the 30s to the 60s, most famous for his work on The Shadow and John W. Campbell’s Astounding Stories. He had a humorous and fluid style, equally adept at seemingly effortless figure drawing, creature design, and hardware. He showed us a future that was truly strange, maybe a little dangerous, and always fun.

Irene,

Thanks for the post on Edd Cartier, I hadn't heard the sad news yet.
One of the greats and definitely an influence on me, along with the art of his contemporary Virgil Finlay.

I'm saddened to hear this, especially given the fact that though this art looks very familiar and I have no doubt seen his work over the years I had never heard of Edd Cartier prior to this. It makes me sad to think of all the amazing illustrators from these classic periods, art that I truly enjoy, that I have completely missed up to this point. The best homage I can give to the man is to go and check out more of his work now and find out about him. I am particularly drawn to the I, Robot example you give here.

My Dad used to say that the only two artists whose work regularly appeared in Astounding/ANALOG he could immediately name were Edd Cartier and Kelly Freas.

Dad's complete run of ASF from 1941 up was a huge influence on me and an immense one on my younger brother, David Weber...

Edd Cartier and Kelly FReas pretty much defined SF art in the 1950's and 60's. Cartier sort of left the business in the early 70's going into(I believe) fine art tho he kept his finger in things. He claimed that then-over 30 years ago-illustration was on the decline. He died at age 94 which, as they say, is not that bad to live to.

Hey Irene,
I came across this article, because I was searching for some of Edd's work after hearing about his passing from Frank Thorne whom I've been speaking with recently.
It's very sad that he passed away on Christmas day but I'm glad he lived a long and fruitful life to the age of 94. Some of his work really shows through in a lot of work being done by modern young artist today, even with the retro look in his covers I can see a lot of influence from other artist I know.
This news article was passed on to me from Frank, I hope it's alright to link it hear. It gives more information on Edd, his work and his life. http://www.mikecorriero.com/images/Private/Cartier_Obit.jpg
