National Geographic and Greg Manchess

Greg Manchess painted the cover and two double page spreads for the upcoming edition of National Geographic.

Without a spot of research to back me up, I will say that it is pretty darn rare for the Geographic Society to use illustration on their covers.

Currently, Greg is working on a "spear fight with mammoths" painting for a Tor book. Should be cool. Hopefully I'll get some progress shots of that.

Ha ! It's always a treat to see pictures of Greg in action. I always love the boldness, the energy in his art. National Geographic can't go wrong making their cover with Greg's art. I can't wait for the spear and mammoths pictures.

Very cool! And why does it not surprise me to see Mr. Schaeffer on the wall in Greg's studio

I really have to say I'm very surprised that they really ACTUALLY put my piece on the cover. I didn't believe them until I saw it printed! Working with NGS is always an adventure...so much to learn. When designing, I constantly strive to involve the viewer in the p.o.v. so that when you look at it, you can feel a part of the story. This type of painting should pull the reader into the history....and become attached to it.

You excel at that Greg!

As Howard Pyle used to say, you should be able to "smell the smoke". I love that!

Irene you're correct it is VERY rare for NG to use an illustrated cover, I have them dating back into the late 30's and can only recall a few.
