Holy crap, Irene. Little-known Mac OS X fact: If you have lots of files on your desktop, your machine's performance takes a hit. Here, check this out: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=2007051510154393
Leopard helps a lot in this regard, what with the automatic filing of anything that comes down the pipe into your machine into the 'Downloads' folder.
See, the problem is, once things go into neat little folders than they cease to exist for me. I need to keep tripping over stuff, thinking, “Crap! I need to get to that!”
It makes me think of sailboats along the California coast...when you're flying into or out of the airport and looking out the window down at the ocean. :)
Irene, one way to easily clean desktop files up is to go to View-->Show View Options up in the menu bar when you're in Finder mode, then click on the bottom button that says Keep Arranged By and choose either Name or Kind from the drop down menu (I also like to check the box next to Show Icon Preview, so your image files will have a little graphic). You can also adjust the size of the icons with the little slider at the top. With this one little trick, you'll immediately feel a lot better, it's a really nice way to be able to keep a ton of stuff on the desktop in a slightly more orderly way!
Wow...that looks like my monitor. It'd look just like mine if I had a wider screen. I am the same way, Irene...I have to have stuff right in front of me, and as crowded as it is, I know just where it is on this virtual desktop, just like my real desktop. Any method of "cleaning" up the mess woud just make it "outasight/outamind" like you said. I even have a second "desktop" ...a folder where I put all the stuff from my original messy desktop....Oh lordy...

that looks like business as usual for me.
I can go weeks without ever getting to see my desktop.
Better get a second monitor...
Ack!!! How do you function? *LOL*
Thought it was a jacket illo - "Monitors of Chaos"... or boat races on the East River.
Looks like my screen from about a week ago. :)
I think that even beats my monitor! My husband would get a kick out of this!
