In the "What Rock Have I Been Under?" folder

The Illustrator's Partnership of America has a blog dedicated to the Orphan Works issue. Agree or disagree, if you're an artist, it's your future they are talking about.

(Where have I been to have not seen this until now?!)

woah! Seriously, thanks for bringing this to our attention, I had no idea there was a blog about it. I'm on the update mailing list they started, but something like this will be so much easier to keep track of what's going on. Thanks so much for sharing

Irene, I think the rock you have been under is the rock known as "busy, overworked, & very tired."

When is the last time you had a real, honest-to-good vacation anyway?

Thanks for finding this & blogging it!

I thought I wrote to you about this a while back. It was the excuse one of your less scrupulous competitors used when they used my art on 17 projects without my permission. They said they couldn't find me... then proceeded to give my address and phone number to a New Zealand publisher who wanted to use the same art. If this law passes, say good-bye to meaningful copyright protection for artists...

Innis - I certainly knew of Orphan Works, but hadn't realized the IPA put together a blog abut it. That makes it a bit easier to follow.
I remember you saying you were having OW issues. The fact that they "respected" your rights enough to pass your info to NZ but never paid you themselevs...Wow! Did it turn out OK for you in the end?

Still working on it... They admitted in a letter that they knew they didn't have my permission, but decided to use the art anyway. The lawyers are duking it out now, but I think both sides wonder what the in-house counsel was thinking... Time will tell

I'm sure you already did but, if not, you should email the IPA. I'm sure they'd like as many case studies as possible.
