Jeff Jones Exhibit at World Fantasy

This is very, very cool news.

Robert Wiener, publisher of Donald Grant Books, has organized an exhibit of Jeff Jones paintings for this year’s World Fantasy Convention. Nearly forty paintings gathered from a number of collectors
will be on display.

John Picacio had an idea to do some kind of appreciation of Jeff Jones at the convention. I offered to help and then immediately dropped the ball, I’m really glad Robert Wiener didn’t. This will surely be a highlight of the convention.

I tried to pull a quote out of Spectrum’s Grand Master essay on Jeff Jones but it’s really best read in its entirety, it is a loving tribute to a great artist with a tragically complicated personal history. If you have a copy of Spectrum 13, check it out.

Jones work is always a treat. I remember the covers to Amazing and Fantastic(long gone) that he did in the early 70's, as well as many covers particularly for the old Fawcett Crest and Ace Books line. And his comic strip IDYLL in National Lampoon. I always have seen him as sadly overlooked by SF fandom over the years despite his profilic contribution. I think it's partly due to what we as artists admire so much about his work-that looseness and painterly look that, I'm sorry to say is lost on some "non-art" people. I still have THE STUDIO, the old Dragon's Dream book(it's worth a fortune I found out) that I treat as a treasure, and it details the work of Jeff Jones,Kaluta, Barry Smith and Berni Wrightson, circa 1974-1979 back in their 26th Street Studio. It was a paltry rent in those days(and I am sure now gutted and now high priced condos). Jones did some of his most amazing and transcending work then. Kaluta once told me "It was that damn enviable wrist of his!". His artbook of recent is really a worthy tome to own. Looking forward to seeing this work at WFC.

I don't have the spectrum essay but I just visited Jones' website-awe inspiring, fascinating, and tragic.
Thanks for this.

I just checked the World Fantasy 2007 site and there's nothing about this exhibit.

How odd not to promote this.

Geek Girl - I was warned that it wasn't mentioned anywhere on the WFC site. It' a shame since its a rare opportunity to see a lot of work from Jones. Talking to a group of my friends, it seems that this exhibit will be the tipping point making them decide to go to WFC.
